Vipers SC took a firm step toward the Uganda Premier League title with a commanding 2-0 victory over KCCA under the floodlights at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Sunday night. First-half goals from Yunus Sentamu and Allan Okello secured the win, extending Vipers’ lead at the top to 40 points, three ahead of NEC, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Police FC. Meanwhile, KCCA’s struggles continued, as their second consecutive defeat left them sixth on 24 points, a staggering 16 behind the leaders.
KCCA started brightly and nearly took an early lead when Ashraf Mugume volleyed over in the second minute. However, once Vipers settled, they dictated play with precision. Sentamu opened the scoring in the 29th minute, curling a brilliant effort past Mutwalib Mugolofa after an incisive setup from Karim Watambala. Just a minute later, Vipers doubled their lead when KCCA captain Filbert Obenchan misjudged a clearance, allowing Okello to fire home a clinical strike against his former club, extending his tally as the league’s top scorer with 13 goals.
Determined to fight back, KCCA introduced Bright Anukani and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza to spark their attack. They created chances, with Mubezi testing Vipers goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza and Saidi Mayanja missing a golden opportunity from close range. A moment of controversy arose in the 73rd minute when Sadat Anaku appeared to be fouled in the box by Hilary Mukundane, but the referee waved away the appeals, frustrating the home side further.
Vipers expertly managed the closing stages, shutting down KCCA’s attacks and maintaining defensive solidity. The victory, their 12th in 17 matches, reaffirmed their status as title favorites, boasting the league’s meanest defense and the most prolific striker in Okello. KCCA, on the other hand, find themselves drifting further from contention, having also lost to NEC days earlier.
Looking ahead, Vipers will host Mbarara City on March 2 as they aim to extend their dominance, while KCCA must regroup quickly for a tough away fixture against Maroons. Elsewhere, BUL eased past Mbale Heroes 3-0, Lugazi edged Wakiso Giants 1-0, and NEC’s draw with Police further bolstered Vipers’ championship aspirations.
