Matchday 16 of the Uganda Premier League concludes today with crucial fixtures, including Kitara’s visit to UPDF and a relegation battle between Mbale Heroes and Mbarara City.
Kitara FC is aiming for a season double over UPDF after their commanding 4-0 victory in the reverse fixture. Under coach Wasswa Bbosa, Kitara has been in fine form, scoring 28 goals in 15 matches while conceding only 12.
UPDF, on the other hand, has struggled for consistency, winning just once in their last five league matches. Coach Paul Kiwanuka’s side has lost three consecutive games, scoring only twice in that period. They sit in 11th place, just above the relegation zone.
At Mbale City Stadium, bottom-placed Mbale Heroes face fellow strugglers Mbarara City in a must-win encounter. The Surgeons have endured a tough campaign, collecting only nine points from 15 matches. New head coach Baker Mbowa hopes his revamped squad, reinforced by 11 January signings, can turn their fortunes around.
Mbarara City, currently 13th with 17 points, recently received a boost after a 3-0 boardroom victory over KCCA. Coach Livingstone Mbabazi will rely on experienced players like Henry Kitegenyi and Seiri Arigumaho, while new signing Peter Onzima could make an impact.
The Ankole Lions won the reverse fixture 1-0 at Kakyeka and will be keen to complete a double over Mbale Heroes. A victory would give them much-needed breathing space in their battle to avoid relegation
