Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Charles Lukwago is set to embark on a new chapter in his career after agreeing to join newly formed South African Premier Division side Siwelele FC from Venda FC.
The experienced shot-stopper, a consistent figure in the national team setup, is currently undergoing medical tests ahead of finalizing the move.
Siwelele FC is the latest entrant into the South African top flight, emerging after the acquisition of SuperSport United for a reported R50 million at the conclusion of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season. With ambitions to make an instant impact, the club sees Lukwago’s signing as a crucial step toward adding leadership and international experience to its ranks.
This development comes after Lukwago’s proposed transfer to Rwandan giants APR FC fell through in the final stages. The goalkeeper then shifted his focus to South Africa, where talks with Siwelele progressed swiftly.
Lukwago boasts an impressive résumé, having played for clubs such as KCCA FC, Proline FC, Lweza United, the now-defunct SC Victoria University, and Ethiopia’s St George FC. His move to Siwelele adds him to the growing list of Ugandan goalkeepers in South Africa’s top division, alongside Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns), Salim Jamal Magoola (Richards Bay), and Isima Watenga (Golden Arrows).
With the Uganda Cranes aiming for a strong showing in the upcoming AFCON and World Cup qualifiers, Lukwago’s transition to a more competitive league is seen as a timely boost for both player and country.
