The Uganda Premier League (UPL) fixture between SC Villa and Maroons, initially scheduled for Saturday, March 8, will now take place on Sunday, March 9. The adjustment follows the confirmation of the Uganda U17 Women’s National Team’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifier against Kenya, which is set to be played at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo on the same day. The UPL Secretariat, in a statement released on Tuesday, March 4, explained that the decision was made to prevent scheduling conflicts and allow fans to support both the national team and their clubs.
SC Villa will host the match at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, marking their return to the venue after playing their last two home games at Prisons Grounds, Luzira. The club had temporarily relocated due to ongoing renovations at Wankulukuku, which is one of the designated training venues for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania in August.
Villa will be looking to extend their impressive home form, having remained unbeaten in nine league matches this season, with six wins and three draws. Their last game at Wankulukuku ended in a 1-1 draw against Police. Maroons, who also use Luzira as their home ground, have had a solid campaign and will be keen to build on their performances. Both teams currently sit level on 24 points, with Villa in 8th place, ahead only on goal difference. Their previous meeting this season ended in a 1-1 draw, with Jackson Nunda scoring for Maroons after David Owori had put Villa in front.
With both sides evenly matched in the standings, Sunday’s encounter is expected to be a tightly contested affair. The return to Wankulukuku could provide Villa with an added advantage as they look to climb further up the table, but Maroons will be determined to make their mark. While Villa has confirmed the venue for this fixture, it remains uncertain whether this signals a permanent return or just a temporary move as renovations continue.
