The football world was left in shock and mourning on Monday, February 24, following the tragic passing of Vipers SC striker Abubakar Lawal. The Nigerian forward, affectionately known as the “Man from Sokoto,” succumbed to injuries sustained after an unfortunate fall from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Bwebajja. His untimely departure at just 29 years old has left a void in Ugandan football and beyond.
Lawal joined Vipers SC on July 18, 2022, from Rwandan club AS Kigali, bringing with him experience and talent. He quickly endeared himself to the club’s fans and made a lasting impact, particularly during Vipers’ historic CAF Champions League campaign. On March 18, 2023, he scored Vipers’ first-ever group stage goal in the competition against Raja Casablanca, etching his name in the club’s history despite the team’s elimination.
Throughout his tenure at Kitende, Lawal played a key role in Vipers’ triumphant 2022/23 season, helping the team secure a domestic double by winning both the Uganda Premier League and the Uganda Cup. His commitment, humility, and passion for the game made him a beloved figure on and off the pitch.
Beyond football, Lawal was known for his generosity and warm personality. He formed deep connections with teammates, fans, and the Ugandan community, even embracing the Uganda Cranes as his own team. His dedication to personal growth was evident in his pursuit of education at Cavendish University while balancing his football career.
Lawal’s passing has deeply affected the football fraternity, with tributes pouring in from players, coaches, and officials. Vipers SC described him as a “unique, caring person with a heart of gold” who always went out of his way to help others. FUFA President Moses Magogo and former coach Alex Isabirye also lauded his contributions to Ugandan football.
Despite his struggles in the current season, Lawal’s legacy remains intact. His contributions, both in football and in life, will never be forgotten. He was more than just a player; he was a friend, a father, and an inspiration to many.
Rest in peace, Abubakar Lawal. Your memory will forever live on in the hearts of those you touched.
