Namboole Stadium is set to welcome back competitive athletics with the National Over Distance Championships on February 15, 2025. This marks the first track event at the facility since its closure for renovations, representing a significant milestone in Uganda’s athletics calendar.
The stadium’s national athletics track was completed in September 2024 as part of the first phase of an extensive renovation project. With the tartan surface now fully ready for use, the upcoming event will serve as the official reopening for athletics competitions.
The National Over Distance Championships will feature a range of events for both men and women, including the 150m, 300m, 600m, 1000m, 6000m, long jump, and javelin throw. These competitions will allow athletes to test their skills and endurance on the newly laid track, with top local contenders set to participate across various disciplines.
This year’s edition is expected to attract elite Ugandan athletes eager to compete on the upgraded track, as well as rising stars looking to make an early-season impact. Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) officials have welcomed the return of events to Namboole, highlighting that the renovated track will provide a world-class platform for athletes preparing for international competitions.
The stadium’s return to hosting athletics is also expected to enhance Uganda’s preparations for major global events, including the 2025 World Championships. Additionally, Namboole is set to host CHAN 2024 in August, further solidifying its role as a premier sporting venue in the country.
