The group stage of the Masaza Cup 2025 has officially concluded after a dramatic Match Day Five that saw several big-name teams fail to progress to the next round.
The final group fixtures were played across various stadiums in the Buganda region, with intense competition marking the end of the first round.
Saturday Fixtures
Match Day Five kicked off on Saturday with two key fixtures:
- Ssese Saza, coached by Edrisa Walusimbi, stunned Busujju Saza, led by Coach Hussein Kato, handing them their first loss of the tournament.
- In another high-stakes game, Buweekula Saza, under Coach Felix Sekabuza, maintained their attacking dominance by thrashing Buvuma Saza 3-0. The loss triggered the sacking of Coach Owen Kato and his entire technical team, with Coach Meddy Vubya stepping in as interim manager.
Sunday Drama
Sunday featured seven more fixtures, but only six goals were scored in total — a clear sign of tightened defenses and cautious play. The biggest upset came in Nakasongola, where Coach Noah Mugerwa’s Buluuli side narrowly defeated Eric Kisuze’s Buddu by a solitary goal, shaking up the expectations for the knockout rounds.
Group Standings After Round One
- Ssese Saza tops Bulange Group with 9 points
- Kyaggwe Saza leads Muganzirwaza Group with 11 points
- Buweekula Saza finishes on top of Masengere Group with 10 points
What’s Next?
The second round of the tournament will kick off on the weekend of August 9–10, 2025. Teams will have only a single weekend to assess and analyze their strategies before the next stage begins, raising the stakes even higher for both players and technical benches.
