In an interview with FUFA’s Communications Department, Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put shared his insights on the 26-man provisional squad selected for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Uganda will face Mozambique on 20th March at Cairo International Stadium, Egypt, before hosting Guinea on 25th March at Namboole Stadium, Uganda.
Preparation and Challenges
As Uganda gears up for these high-stakes matches, Coach Put emphasized a game-by-game approach, acknowledging the fierce competition in African football.
“You cannot underestimate any African team. In World Cup qualifiers, opportunities are scarce, so we must be well-prepared. Our players understand that these chances are rare in their careers.”
With a tight schedule and limited preparation time, some players will join the camp just days before the Mozambique clash.
“Unfortunately, we have a short preparation period. Some players will arrive on March 17, and training begins on March 18, leaving us with only two days before the game. It is challenging, but we will not make excuses. We will do our best to achieve good results.”
Strategy for the Three Home Matches
Uganda has three crucial home matches this year against Guinea, Mozambique, and Somalia. Instead of overanalyzing the numbers, Coach Put prefers to focus on performance.
“I do not like to overthink. We performed well away in the AFCON qualifiers, and we should maintain that level. At home, we need to make a difference. The key is to focus on our game rather than stressing over numbers.”
Emerging Talent and Team Dynamics
Coach Put praised young talents such as Sibbick Toby, Watambala Abdul Karim, and Patrick Kakande, but stressed that success comes from a team-first mentality rather than relying on individual players.
“The entire team is crucial. We do not have irreplaceable top-level players. Yes, we are missing Halid Lwaliwa, Elio Capradossi, and Arnold Odongo due to injuries, but Uganda’s strength lies in collective effort and mentality.”
World Cup Ambitions
With Uganda seeking its first-ever World Cup qualification, Put highlighted the importance of seizing the moment.
“Every game is crucial. You do not get many chances to qualify for a World Cup in your career. I have been close before, and when you are close, you want more. Uganda must push forward and stay focused.”
Call for Fan Support
Coach Put urged Ugandan fans to rally behind the team, emphasizing how their passion and support can create a positive atmosphere for the players.
“Our strength comes from mentality and unity. Fans play a significant role in this. Ugandans love football, and their support gives us the energy we need.”
As Uganda prepares for these crucial qualifiers, the nation will be hoping for a strong performance under Coach Paul Put’s leadership. The journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins now.
