Express FC delivered a statement performance on Wednesday evening, dismantling Mbarara City 4-1 at the newly refurbished Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, in what was arguably their most commanding display of the season so far.
The Red Eagles looked fired up right from kickoff, dominating possession and creating chances at will.
Their intent paid off early when Rashid Kawawa broke the deadlock in the 11th minute after his low drive took a wicked deflection past the Mbarara goalkeeper.
The hosts doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark through Richard Basangwa, who rose highest to head home from a well-measured Kawawa cross.
As the visitors struggled to cope with Express’ relentless pressure, Ssenonga Kagawa made it 3-0 moments before halftime, turning in Henry Wamala’s precise delivery.
Kagawa later completed his brace midway through the second half, calmly slotting home in the 67th minute to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Mbarara City managed a late consolation through substitute Gabriel Eragu in the 71st minute, but it was too little, too late to alter the outcome.
The emphatic victory marked only Express’ second win of the campaign, but it was enough to propel them five places up the table to fourth with eight points from six games. Mbarara City, meanwhile, continue to languish near the bottom with just two points to their name.
Elsewhere in Luzira, URA FC and Maroons FC battled to a cagey goalless draw in a game of few clear chances.
The result means the Tax Collectors have now drawn five of their six matches this term, leaving them two spots behind Express in sixth. Maroons sit further down in eleventh with five points.
