Uganda’s U17 men’s national team, the Uganda Cubs, put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell short against a high-flying Cameroon side, losing 4-3 in an international friendly in Morocco.
Despite the defeat, the Cubs showcased resilience and attacking prowess, with Ssozi Derick and Bogere James (brace) finding the back of the net. However, they were undone by a clinical Cameroonian side known for its ruthless finishing.
Facing the newly crowned UNIFFAC champions, Uganda knew they were up against a formidable opponent. Cameroon had stormed through their regional qualifiers, scoring 22 goals in just three matches, including a 9-0 demolition of the Central African Republic.
Led by coach Alioum Saidou, the Young Lions play a fast, direct style of football, with star forward Mafany Luma emerging as a major goal threat after netting eight times in the qualifiers.
Despite conceding early, Uganda responded well, matching Cameroon’s intensity and keeping the game within reach. Ssozi and Bogere continued their fine form, adding to their goal tally after scoring in the previous friendly against Burkina Faso. However, Cameroon’s attacking depth proved decisive, exposing Uganda’s defensive vulnerabilities at crucial moments.
Head coach Brian Ssenyondo remained optimistic about the team’s performance, praising their attacking improvements while emphasizing the need to strengthen the defense ahead of the TotalEnergies U17 AFCON Finals.
“We are improving with every game. We created chances and scored goals, which is a good sign. Now we must focus on improving our defensive structure before the tournament starts,” Ssenyondo said.
The Cubs now shift their focus to their opening match against tournament hosts Morocco on Sunday at 10 PM local time (1 AM EAT, Monday).
