With just hours remaining before their crucial Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 qualifier against Ethiopia, Crested Cranes captain Viola Nambi has assured Ugandans that the team is in high spirits and fully prepared for the challenge.

Speaking at a press conference held at FUFA headquarters in Mengo on Thursday morning, Nambi expressed confidence in the squad’s mental and physical readiness.

“Everyone is confident and mentally prepared for the game,” she said. “The team is strong enough, and we are ready to give everything for the country because we are in good spirits.”

The Crested Cranes will host Ethiopia in the first leg of their WAFCON qualifier on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, before traveling to Addis Ababa for the return leg on February 26. Uganda is determined to return to the prestigious continental tournament after missing out on the 2024 edition.

Nambi also highlighted the advantage of having a balanced squad comprising both home-based and foreign-based players.

“A mix of local and foreign-based players is important because it strengthens our mentality and readiness to fight for the country. It gives us a strong foundation to push for qualification,” she stated.

The Finland-based forward, recently appointed as captain, emphasized that the team is focused and free from pressure.

“I have been around the team for the last three days, and I can say the team is confident. We have talked and agreed to stay strong mentally to overcome challenges. Otherwise, we are ready,” she said.

On her new leadership role, Nambi expressed pride and determination.

“There is no pressure at all. It is a good moment for me, and it is a privilege to be captain. I believe in the team and the players selected. I am ready to work with everyone,” she added.

The Crested Cranes will look to make a strong start in their quest for WAFCON 2026 qualification, with Nambi and her squad eager to make history for Uganda.
