Uganda Cranes midfielder Allan Okello has expressed strong belief in the team’s readiness to secure a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as they gear up to face South Africa this Friday at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Needing only one point to book their ticket to Morocco, Okello highlighted the squad’s commitment to achieving this goal.
Speaking after the first training session at Namboole, Okello emphasized the team’s determination: “The mood in the camp is very positive. Everyone understands the importance of this game and is putting in the effort to make qualification a reality,” he said.
“The key objective on Friday is to ensure we qualify, and every player is fully focused on that. Even those who aren’t on the field share the same dedication.”
Okello, who has been crucial in Uganda’s recent fixtures, stressed the collective effort needed to reach AFCON. “I’m committed to giving my all on the pitch. While results can sometimes be unpredictable, on Friday, we need to push beyond our limits—not just me, but the whole team—because our target is clear.”
Despite the high stakes, Okello dismissed the idea of pressure, viewing the match as an exciting chance to make history in front of their home fans.
“There’s no pressure. For me, it’s a special opportunity to play at home and create memorable moments with our supporters, who act as our 12th player. Their support is invaluable, especially in this match.”
He added that the Cranes’ focus extends beyond physical readiness to mental toughness and team spirit. “We need to be mentally strong. It’s all about character and attitude, and we are fully determined to get the job done.”
Leading Group K with 10 points, the Uganda Cranes are just one step away from securing their place in Morocco for AFCON 2025.
