Uganda Cranes played an impressive game, scoring two great goals to take the lead against South Africa, but a last-minute goal forced a 2-2 draw in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Orlando Stadium on Friday night.
South Africa started strong, putting pressure on Uganda early on, but Cranes’ goalkeeper Ismail Watenga made some important saves, including two from Oswin Appollis. South Africa eventually took the lead in the 13th minute when Khuliso Mudau’s pass found Lyle Foster, who chipped the ball over Watenga.
Uganda struggled to create chances in the first half and relied on strong defending to keep the score at 1-0. The Cranes came out stronger in the second half and surprised South Africa with two quick goals. The comeback began when Denis Omeda intercepted a pass, moved forward, and blasted a powerful shot from 30 yards that flew past South African keeper Veli Mothwa into the top corner.
Three minutes later, Rogers Mato saw Mothwa off his line and shot from just past the halfway line. Mothwa misjudged the shot, and the ball slipped through his hands, giving Uganda a 2-1 lead.
Uganda’s defense held strong as South Africa pushed hard for an equalizer. Watenga continued to make key saves, including stopping a close header from Siyabonga Ngezana. Uganda’s backline worked hard to protect their lead.
But in the 95th minute, Uganda’s hopes of victory were dashed when South African debutant Thalente Mbatha scored from a rebounded shot, hitting the inside of the post to level the game. Despite the late setback, the Cranes showed great determination, earning a well-deserved point.
